The leg press compared to the squat is like Pepsi compared to Coke, or Lamborghini compared to Ferrari, or Pacino compared to DeNiro. It’s a very, very good second best, but it’s still second best.

Of course, it’s a matter of taste, but ultimately, I’m right.

The leg press is a fantastic exercise, and arguably, it can pack as much muscle on your legs as squats. It’s less dangerous, it’s much more comfortable to do as you are sitting/lying down, and it’s far less exhausting than squats.

But you aren’t a wimp, are you! So you will do BOTH squats and leg press!

When using the leg press always be sure to keep your butt tight into the seat and your hands firmly on the grips. Place your feet a little less than shoulder width apart on the platform, and lower the weight slowly so that your knees are almost touching your chest, before firing the weight back up in a controlled movement.

With both squats and leg press you should refrain from flexing your knees at the peak of the movement as doing so can cause serious injuries.

Always start leg press with a very high rep warm up set before gradually increasing the weight set by set. The mechanics of the leg press ensure that it is a fun exercise, certainly by comparison to squats, and you should make dramatic progress in terms of strength in a short space of time. Within a few months you should be shifting some truly shocking poundage with this exercise, and it is not unusual for a clean but serious bodybuilder to regularly complete sets of 800+ pounds.
